WASHINGTON, Feb. 5, 2024 — The U.S Patent and Trademark office issued U.S. Patent 12,212,893 to the Chertoff Group and SureScan, for the underlying technology that enables Gigaplex™ Remote Screening Technology. The Open Architecture Gigaplex technology facilitates efficient screening of images anywhere on the network from any manufacturers CT screening equipment enabling increased passenger throughput with optimized staffing.
Gigaplex is a transformational airport security technology that allows real-time screening of images from airport x-ray machines at any lane, remote screening room, offsite locations or remote airports. Gigaplex meets open architecture Digital Imaging and Communications in Security (DICOS) standards. The design provides interoperability for any standards-based checkpoint or checked baggage computed tomography (CT) system anywhere in the world.
Gigaplex development funding came in part from The Department of Homeland Security Science & Technology (DHS S&T) Small Business Innovation Research Program (SIBR). Gigaplex is a strategic joint venture among The Chertoff Group, SureScan, Corporation and VMD Corp, an Xcelerate Solutions company. Lee Kair, co-manager of Gigaplex LLC, who was named on the patent, said, "National level remote screening enables government and airport authorities to maximize security officer resources and benefit from efficiencies at airports throughout the network."
Jeff Hamel, co-manager of Gigaplex LLC, who was named on the patent, said, "Given the steady growth in aviation travel and the need for staffing flexibility at checkpoints, Gigaplex is ideally designed to enhance security while improving the passenger experience."
Gigaplex allows fast and secure transfer of the image files so they can be delivered to remote officers with capacity. Another key component of Gigaplex is its covert node, which enables bomb technicians, at a secure non-airport location, to create bags with real threat items and remotely test the performance of all officers operating in the remote screening environment. This facilitates the capture of CT images for algorithm training and development.
